Printed Circuit Board Designer (T-3)
Location: Upton, NY
Why Work at BNL?
Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.
The Printed Circuit Board Design Group in the Instrumentation Division is involved in the design of complex analog and digital multi-layer circuit boards for advanced and low noise signal processing system for large experiments such as ATLAS, SBND and LSST to routine prototyping for research and development. The group also, designs complex circuit boards that serve as detector elements. The Instrumentation Division currently has a full-time opportunity for a Printed Circuit Board Designer (T-3).
Under general technical direction, assist scientists and engineers in the design and layout of very complex layouts of printed circuit boards. Provide innovative and creative technical solutions to working plans, detailed drawings, and completed electrical drawings of printed circuit board components and assemblies for a wide variety of specialized products. The successful candidate will work from preliminary schematics, notes, part lists, rough or detailed sketches, a basic description of the board function, and configuration and arrangement as defined by the engineers. Will establish design standards and configurations, work with CAD/CAM software to verify completed design elements while checking dimensions, materials to be used and quantities. Assignments are usually on a project basis with long-term objectives and anticipated results. May direct and coordinate the work efforts of other technical support personnel assigned to a specific project.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
•Requires the equivalent of a technical institute or associate’s degree in a related scientific or technical field.
•Minimum of six (6) year’s experience in the field of Printed Circuit Board Design.
•Experience drawing schematics from engineers input, creating new components for a parts library.
•Experience designing complex analog and digital multi-layer printed circuit boards for ultra-low noise analog and high-speed/high density digital applications, and working with CAM routines for inspecting PCB artwork for outside fabrication.
•Ability able to work closely with Scientists and Engineers on specialized assignments with the aptitude to exercise a high degree of initiative and judgment.
•Ability to effectively work and make decisions with minimal supervision.
•Familiar with IPC Standards for PCB Design.
•Experience using Mentor Graphics Layout and Router Software
