Job Description

Job Summary:

Material science and design is an integral part of integrated computational materials engineering and the emergence of advanced manufacturing, such as additive manufacturing (AM). This position focuses on the application of fundamentals in materials science and failure analysis to perform research in material design and selection to ensure its intended behavior and performance. A key element of this position is the use of advanced failure analysis techniques to elucidate failure mechanisms and assess component performance for a variety of materials (metals, polymers, composites, ceramics, coatings). Research areas will include connecting thermomechanical processing to material structure, relating structure to material and mechanical properties, and characterization of material failure mechanisms in assessing material performance. Will work independently and in teams to support identification funding opportunities, prepare research proposals, lead and manage materials science and failure analysis research programs and activities for a wide array of material, interact with both government and commercial clients, and prepare reports, technical papers and presentations.



Education/Experience:

Requires a MS degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science or equivalent with at least a 3.0 GPA. MS requires 3-5 years of related experience in materials science and failure analysis. PhD requires 0-5 years of related experience in materials science and failure analysis. Must have a solid foundation in physical and mechanical metallurgy, intimate knowledge of failure analysis and metallurgical evaluation tools and techniques, and experience with advanced manufacturing and processing methods, including additive manufacturing (AM). A basic understanding of solid mechanics, environmental degradation, joining methods (welding, brazing), and experimental material validation is preferred. Familiarity with advanced manufacturing methods, such as AM, and material model validation are desirable. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills; must possess the ability to take responsibility for completing tasks on time and within budget; must be able to work both independently and in a team environment; experience in the following areas would be an asset in this position: polymeric materials and processing, ceramic materials, composite materials, basic solid mechanics, and experimental mechanics. A valid/clear driver's license is required.
